The Motherhood Tax Is Shaping Who Gets to Lead

Ahead of Mother’s Day and the Women’s Fund SouthCoast’s 16th Annual Mother’s Day 5K, Executive Director Christine Monska authored a Community Voices op-ed for The New Bedford Light exploring the “motherhood tax” and the structural barriers shaping who is able to remain in the workforce, advance into leadership, and participate fully in our democracy.

Drawing from both personal experience and broader systems analysis, the piece examines the intersection of caregiving, economic security, maternal health, and gender equity — and calls for greater investment in the supports families need to thrive.
