The Women’s Fund SouthCoast invites you to join us at Cisco Brewers in New Bedford on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, for the return of our 15th Annual Mother’s Day 5k Road Race & Walk!
This yearly tradition honors and celebrates the incredible mother figures and women who strengthen our communities as well as raises crucial funds to support our mission of advancing equity and justice for everyone through research, grantmaking, and advocacy.
Henrietta “Hetty” Howland Robinson Green (1834-1916) lived on 7th Street in Downtown New Bedford and was one of the richest women in the world in the 19th century. At the time of her death in1916, her net worth was estimated to be about $2.5 billion in today’s money. She was a major philanthropist known for offering free or low-interest loans to people who often could not obtain them. She was also a strong proponent of financial literacy and empowerment for all women.
Born and raised in New Bedford, Dr. Juan Bennett Drummond (1864-1926) was the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and ran a private medical practice out of her home as well as an office above what is now the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. She was a tireless advocate for her local community and became a co-founder of the New Bedford Home for the Aged.
